Tromsø — Beneath the Arctic Sky
From the soft glow of the Arctic blue hour to the dancing Northern Lights above snow-covered landscapes, Tromsø revealed a quieter side of Norway. Winter here is defined not only by its dramatic scenery, but by the calm, silence, and wonder found beneath the polar sky.
The Arctic welcomed me with a lesson in patience. A snowstorm had cancelled my flight the day before, reminding me that nature would always decide the schedule here. Then came this morning. Crystal-clear skies, fresh snow stretching to the horizon, and a frozen silence broken only by the first light of Arctic twilight. Standing above Tromsø in −18°C, I knew the adventure had truly begun. All that remained was to wait for darkness—and the possibility that the northern lights would appear.
As daylight gradually strengthened, Tromsø revealed another side of itself. Snow-covered mountains rose quietly beyond the city, while pastel shades of pink and blue settled across the Arctic sky. Every rooftop, shoreline, and distant peak seemed wrapped in stillness, inviting me to slow down and simply take in the beauty of a winter morning at the edge of the world.
As the last traces of twilight disappeared, I drove beyond Tromsø into the silent Arctic countryside, where darkness slowly revealed the night sky. The cold was relentless, forcing me back into the warmth of the car every few minutes as my fingers froze, even through thick gloves. Yet each time the aurora began to dance overhead, I stepped back into the snow without hesitation. In moments like these, the cold wasn’t the story—it was simply the price of witnessing something extraordinary, where every frame carried the excitement of standing beneath one of nature’s greatest spectacles.
Behind the Camera
Every image in this gallery was photographed on a Fujifilm X-T5. Paired with the Fujinon XF 16mm f/1.4 R WR for photographing the Northern Lights and the Fujinon XF 55–200mm f/3.5–4.8 R LM OIS for capturing Tromsø’s snow-covered mountains and distant Arctic landscapes, this combination helped document three unforgettable days beneath some of Norway’s most spectacular winter skies.
